Does second-hand shopping have a future on the high street?

With responsible and sustainable fashion becoming ever more popular, we looked at whether this has had a positive impact on charity and second-hand shops on a typical, local high street.

We visited the Kings Heath high street and spoke to the town centre manager, Martin Mullaney, as well as an Oxfam book shop and the owner of Top Banana vintage clothing shop.

Martin Mullaney explained the importance of charity shops to a local high street, and their important role. He outlined the positives of charity shops, such as the recycling of items, “instead of sending stuff to landfill they are reusing them”, which reflects why charity shops can be so good for sustainable fashion. He further reinforced that “there is an eco-need as part of that recycling agenda”, which is a similar concept to popular vintage clothing stores such as the national organisation, COW, a shop where old clothes are recycled and made into something new.

He also emphasised that there is a “social need” for charity shops. They are very helpful towards vulnerable people, “a lot of the charity shops have volunteers who are long term unemployed, who are very vulnerable, perhaps some have mental health illnesses and they provide a welcoming environment to help”.

However, despite these positives, it is a very overcrowded market and therefore is forcing some charity shops to close down. On Kings Heath high street alone, there are currently 12 charity shops and more continuing to open. Martin Mullaney explained that the problem Kings Heath has at the moment is that there is “too many charity shops, so the market has been spread very thinly amongst 12 charity shops”, causing some shops, such as Extra Service Care, to close down.

The overcrowded market has also forced some charity shops to find their niche. For example, the Oxfam book shop.

Speaking to manager, Alison, she emphasised how it was important for them to have a market niche, for example books and records, as it made her shop different to the others on the high street and gave them a “slight edge” over the other charity shops. She expressed that there are more people using charity shops now because some chain shops on the high street have closed down, explaining that they are “more affordable and there are more options now”. She believed that charity shops do have a future on the high street, particularly because “everybody loves a bargain!”

Vintage shop, Top Banana has also found their niche, selling one off and unique pairs of Converse and Vans trainers.

We spoke to the owner of Top Banana, Amanda, whose shop has been on Kings Heath high street for 16 years. Amanda explained how it is majority young people who visit and spend money in her shop, but also emphasised the need for competitive prices against the chain shops on the high street in order to sell. Top Banana’s best sellers are the unique Converse and Vans that get shipped in from America, all priced competitively, Amanda said “we sell them for much cheaper, so you can buy two pairs for still cheaper than buying one pair from the shops here.” This second-hand shop has been open for 16 years, and Amanda explained that it’s because what she sells will never go out of fashion and appeals to “generation after generation”.

It is clear that in order to thrive as a business selling second-hand goods on the high street, a shop needs to find its niche or risk facing closure.

Natalie Portman helps to recognise ignored female directors at this year’s Oscars.

The black and gold Dior haute couture dress honoured eight female directors whose films weren’t nominated at this year’s Oscars, no women were nominated for the category.

Stitched into the cape of the look, were the names Scafaria, Wang, Gerwig, Diop, Heller, Matsoukas, Har’el and Sciamma.

Perhaps one of the most notable snubbed names would be Greta Gerwig, director of the highly regarded “Little Women”. The film scored 95% by Rotten Tomatoes and 4/4 by Roger Ebert.

Another highly regarded film that was ignored by The Academy was directed by Lorene Scafaria, the film “Hustlers” featured a star studded cast of women including Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Lizzo and Constance Wu.

When asked about her outfit choice on the red carpet, Portman said that she “wanted to recognise the women who were not recognised for their incredible work this year in a subtle way.”

It perhaps comes at no surprise that the woman behind the detailed stitching was Maria Grazia Chiuri is not only known for being the first female artistic director of Dior but also for her feminist views. In an interview with Vogue in 2018, she said “women supporting each other is the future”, in true fitting fashion with Portman’s statement dress.

With the Oscars being the last film awards ceremony of the season, perhaps we can hope for more equality in next years nominations.

Black Friday deals are not what they seem, with Twitter users accusing online fashion retailer ASOS to be among the offenders.

Today, ASOS launched its “biggest ever” Black Friday sale, with discounts of up to 70% off everything on site.

However, shoppers were quick to criticise this morning on Twitter. #ASOSBlackFriday is currently trending, but not only with promotional tweets from @ASOS, but also with accusations that “deals” that aren’t what they seem.

For example, a branded fleece purchased 2 weeks ago by @scamp_studio cost £45, but in the sale claims to have been reduced from £50 to £47.50.

It’s not only brands which sell men’s fashion that have been called out for initially raising prices to make sale prices look better. @vsatkins on Twitter, pointed out that only yesterday a pair of ladies’ boots were priced at £36, yet today’s sale says they were reduced from £45 to £33.50, with accusing ASOS of a “scam”.

Zara amongst shops expected to drop deals this Black Friday

Retailers prepare for their Black Friday sales to kick off the Christmas shopping season, taking place next Friday. A variety of shops will cut their prices, usually for the Friday only, but often for the whole weekend.

Zara is among the high street fashion brands who are expected to drop their prices for the event, with ‘Blacker Friday’ predicting offers of up to 30% discount, as done in previous years, both in-store and online.

Garments in Zara’s current collection, expected to be included in Black Friday sales.

In previous years, fashionista favourite ASOS offered 20% discount on ALL items on site, including products already discounted, an ideal place to grab the latest trends without having to brave busy shopping centres. Fashion lovers believe it will be THE place to bag a designer bargain, with ASOS stocking big brand names too, such as Calvin Klein or Steve Madden.

Calvin Klein products, one of the many big brand names expected to be a part of the upcoming sales.

The Black Friday bargains don’t just apply to fashion and beauty brands. John Lewis, Argos and Currys PC World are amongst the many other shops who will also be cutting their prices of technology, toys and much more.

Mobile phone retailer, EE is predicted by experts to offer perhaps one of the better Black Friday deals, giving either a free TV or Nintendo Switch when buying selected new phone contracts.

Current award schemes offered by EE.

Black Friday began in the USA with it coming to the UK in around 2010. As the American holiday, Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, the Friday after is often treated as an unofficial holiday. Shops would drop their prices, knowing many people are off work, to begin the festive season.

Keep updated with your favourite brands to find out when deals start to drop.
